Guarded by the majestic Waterberg mountains, the cheetahs flourish in this commercialized area where peace and tranquility reign. This is an area where game is plentiful with eland, hartebeest, blesbok, giraffe, hippo, crocodile, warthog, ostrich, zebra, impala, waterbuck, kudu and many more wandering the land. Experience the living silence of the bushveld, the smell of the sunbaked land, the peace of the day and the mystery of the night. Combine the Ranch’s rich variety of wildlife and bird species, clear night skies and minimal signs of human development, and you have nature at its best! The aim of the program is to ensure the long-term survival of the cheetah, african wild dog and other wild animals

icon_accommodation Accommodation: Volunteers will stay in one of three chalets and will have a common area with a pool, patio and braai to socialize.
icon_work_schedule Work Schedule: Volunteers will settle in upon arrival and will be taken on a two and half hour feeding tour and be given an orientation. Throughout the week volunteers will help with farm maintenance (ex. Painting fences of animal camps, thatching and road maintenance) and animal care such as cub interactions and feeding.

GENERAL
The aim of this program is to breed rare and endangered species (which includes the cheetah and African wild dog) and to support scientific investigations into all aspects of these species. We also want to promote public awareness with a focus on the younger generation of the pressing need for wildlife conservation.We play a role in conservation biology by helping maintain adequate gene pools of rare and endangered species. We want to continue supporting future breeding projects at the centre and re-establish endangered wildlife species back into areas where they once occurred naturally.
VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE
As a volunteer you will learn the processes involved to care for endangered species and become responsible for the continued development of these animals.
Accommodation
Volunteers will stay in one of three chalets and will have a common area with a pool, patio and braai to socialize.
SCHEDULE
Tuesday: Volunteers arrive and receive a tour and introduction to the program Wednesday - Tuesday: Farm maintenance (ex. painting fences for animal camps, thatching, road maintenance) and animal care such as cub interaction, feeding and cleaning. Sunday: Volunteers have OFF and can relax around the farm.
MENU
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided. If you have any dietary requirements please make us aware prior to your arrival.
OUTINGS
Volunteers are taken to Zebula Golf Estate and Spa where there are numerous activities offered and a restaurant which serves scrumptious meals.
LAUNDRY
Volunteers are able to submit their laundry once per week.
CANCELLATION POLICY
When possible, the client will be moved to another suitable date. Cancellations made 61 or more days prior to the state of the booking will be subjected to an administrative feed to cover the bank charges involved with refunding the client, as well as program reservation. Cancellations made 60 days or less prior to the start date of the booking will be subjected to a 50% fee of the booking rate, which exception of an administrative fee, will be transferred back into the bank account it came out of. Cancellations made 30 days or less prior to the start date of the booking will be subjected to a 100% fee of the total booking rate (the package rate). In other words, you will not be refunded.

Q Is there a preferable time to submit my application in hopes of gaining a spot on the roster?
A There is no cut off period of when to apply as we run our programs all year round. We do however book up quickly so we suggest booking early to secure your spot.
Q What is the age limitation for participating in Volunteer Southern Africa projects?
A We have a minimum age of 18 and there is no maximum age. If you are under 18 and wish to participate in one of our programs you may come with a guardian.
Q What is the minimum stay?
A The minimum stay at Living with Cheetahs is 1 week.
Q How do the arrivals work/which airport do I arrive into?
A If arriving by air, we will be waiting for you at the Johannesburg International (JNB) arrivals hall.
Q Are flights included?
A No, flights are not included.
Q What are the flight arrival times?
A Arrival time is before 11am.
Q Do you monitor the flights?
A Yes, we monitor flights before your arrival to get the approximate time of your landing and will be at the airport waiting for you.
Q What if there’s a flight delay?
A Please contact us as soon as you receive notice of a flight delay.
Q Do I need a Visa?
A Please enquire through the South African embassy in your country or go to the South African Home Affairs link for more information regarding Visa requirements. Please note, we are not responsible for your traveling documentation.
Q When does the project start?
A Tuesdays. We will fetch you from the airport and take you to the project where you will have time to settle in and look around.
Q What if it doesn’t suit me to arrive on a Monday?
A For an additional cost, we can arrange for a special pick-up.
Q Are airport transfers included?
A Yes, 2 airport transfers are included (to and from the airport).
Q Can anyone apply?
A Yes, anyone can apply to join our program, subject to being 18 and above.
Q Do you cater for vegetarians or other dietary requirements?
A Yes, we can accommodate most dietary requirements, please ensure you let us know of your dietary requirements prior to arrival.
Q How do I pay for the project?
A

We require a $300 (USD) deposit to secure your place at the project, and ask for the remaining balance to be paid 60 days before your arrival. We have two payment option. You can either pay via international bank - transfer/wire (please note that the administration costs are at your expense) or you can pay via a safe and secure online credit card facility.

Q Do you offer payment options?
A Yes, you are welcome to discuss other payment options with us.
Q Is there a best time of the year to go?
A We are lucky to have incredible weather at the Living with Cheetahs program. Our winters are from May to August where we have beautiful sunny days with little rain. The average temperature is about 23 degrees celsius. Evenings can be cool please pack a warm sweater and scarf. Our summers are from September to March, and the days can get hot with an average around 31 degrees celsius, the afternoons have a chance of thunderstorm which typically only last about an hour.
Q Which insurance company is often used for this type of trip?
A We offer our volunteers comprehensive coverage - please enquire with us. It is important to travel with insurance to ensure your security and safety.
Q Would I need any vaccinations /anti-malaria medication?
A You would only require a tetanus shot.
Q Are there any medical facilities on site to deal with serious issues quickly?
A We have a hospital within 20-25 minutes of the project
Q My doctor suggests a rabies shot.
A Although we have never had never had rabies on the property, this is a personal choice and not a requirement.
Q My travel clinic suggests Yellow fever, Typhoid, Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis B etc.
A None of the above are required.
Q Do I need mosquito repellent?
A We highly suggest anti-mosquito repellent in the summer months, from September to March.
Q What do you recommend for communication between South Africa and home?
A Your volunteer package includes an internet connection. Volunteers staying longer than 3 weeks are recommended to purchase a pay-as-you-go SIM card for their mobile phone upon their arrival at the airport.
Q Do you offer any discounts to volunteers?
A Volunteers receive a 5% discount if they opt for two or more packages.
Q Any returning volunteer discount?
A Yes, past volunteers receive 10% off their future volunteer experience.
